FRIDA Kahlo was known for surreal artworks of herself as well as her turbulent marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera.

Next month Filmspace at Artspace Mackay will take a trip to Mexico, with the award-winning biopic/drama film Frida, by acclaimed director Julie Taymor. It is a visual feast of Mexican colour and beauty celebrating the life and art of the surrealist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

This film chronicles the life of Frida, from her complex and enduring relationships with her mentor and famous fellow artist Diego Rivera, to her illicit and controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative romantic entanglements with women. Frida lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic and sexual revolutionary.

It is a movie about art, which is a work of art in itself. The film's unique visual language takes us into an artist's head. Paintings come to life and intertwined in them is Frida. …
