TIME is running out for students to win a place at the university of the year.

Teesside University, the Times Higher Magazine's University of the Year, revealed that on the first day of clearing it received 1,300 calls from students, 300 more than last year.

On the same day, its website had 8,000 views. By yesterday it had had 17,000 visitors and over 27,000 page views.

The university has said it is now almost full for full-time courses.

According to figures released by university applications service Ucas yesterday, 183,485 students are now eligible for clearing - up 47,600 on the same time last year.

Some 23,040 students have already found a place through clearing - up from 22,599 last summer.

Last year, 47,600 students found places through clearing, but it has been predicted that the number will be smaller this year.

When the clearing process started there were around 18,500 courses with vacancies, which translates to around 30,000 places. …
