THE brightest of bright sparks got together for a brainstorming session in Byron Bay yesterday.

Southern Cross University assembled what it called a70 of this country's highest level thinkers on economic and social developmenta to share their a[approximately]big ideas' on regional Australia.

Jeremy Buultjens, head of the university's Regional Futures Institute, which hosted the Transformational Economic Development Symposium, said the calibre of the speakers was impressive.

Among yesterday's speakers was NSW Business Chamber CEO Stephen Cartwright. Mr Cartwright spoke on a chamber strategy document entitled 10 Big Ideas for growth in the Northern Rivers, which grew out of a state project that began in March, to be part of a 12-month lead-up to the NSW election.

Its aim was to restore NSW to its premier role in Australian business, he said.

One controversial idea for the Northern Rivers was to allow its business burdens a such as payroll tax, worker compensation and stamp duty a to mirror the Queensland situation, rather than NSW, in order to remain competitive, Mr Cartwright said. …
