Council Must Make Waste Charge Fairer

On Wednesday at Maryborough's council meeting I took the public participation slot and spoke to deaf ears.

For nine years I have owned a 16-unit motel in Hervey Bay. In 2007 the rating structure for waste rubbish was changed to reflect the amount of units I owned, not the amount of rubbish bins we have been operating with. I have five waste bins and that is enough for my output. Council tell me I can have 12 bins. We should pay for five.

My waste costs have risen 382.6 per cent since 2006 for the SAME service! It's not an equitable distribution of costs. The council says I quote "The new policy was a change from charging for a bin service charge that reflected the level of service provided". My level of service has stayed exactly the same and is quite adequate. So why the extra charges? I don't have a restaurant so my collection is once a week. …
