Main Aims to Go Extra Mile; Stoute's Charge Hopes for Goodwood Celebration

JUST like our climate, Main Aim blows hot and cold. You just never know what to expect from him when he sets foot on a racecourse.

Goodwood, where Main Aim goes for Group Two glory in the totesport.com Celebration Mile, hardly anticipated the deluge which caused Thursday's meeting to be abandoned.

Today's fixture on the Sussex Downs goes ahead. The track has recovered and is now raceable with dry weather forecast for the weekend.

Conditions will be testing, which resulted in five withdrawals from the feature event at the 48-hour declaration stage, but it will not inconvenience Main Aim if he is in the mood to go about his business.

With Ryan Moore still sidelined with a wrist injury, the mount on Sir Michael Stoute's five-year-old is handed to Eddie Ahern (pictured right) who has already enjoyed two Group successes on these shores recently in addition to landing the Norsk Derby in Oslo.

Stoute has celebrated victory six times in the last 10 years and Main Aim has the ability to improve the stable's fine record in this race.

His July Cup second and Queen Anne Stakes fourth to Paco Boy last year is an indication of he can achieve.

He had to work hard for his only success so far this season, a Group Three offering at Haydock which he also collected in 2009.

Not for the first time, though, he let his supporters down badly at Royal Ascot before a much-improved performance in the Betfair Cup at Glorious Goodwood when beaten little more than a length in fourth behind Lord Shankill.

Plenty of punters will be keen to take him on here because he cannot be trusted, but he has only three opponents and there are question marks about them as well.

Poet's Voice, the only three-year-old in the line-up, has yet to recapture his smart juvenile form - although his latest effort was more encouraging. …
