IN the diamond industry, competition is fierce. A new business must compete against entrenched competition, often in the form of nation-wide franchises.

They must also offer a top-shelf product, despite knowing that most customers have close to zero idea what they are looking at.

For Olivier Claes and his business Claes Diamonds, it has been a battle that he has relished.

The business was born on the Sunshine Coast three years ago and has now expanded to cover Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

He has also secured wholesale agreements with diamond dealers in Antwerp, Belgium Co where he grew up.

"What that means is constant supply contracts on offer (for diamond sellers) on the Sunshine Coast. Some businesses know what needs they have and can now achieve a better buying capacity.

"However, it will mean more for buyers in Sydney and Melbourne than on the Sunshine Coast."

Mr Claes has never changed the strategy of his business.

He will travel to potential clients and spend up to two hours with them explaining the history and the qualities of diamonds, rather than simply selling a product. …
