Jury Was in Deadlock in Murder Trial of Coffs Man

THE jury in the Coffs Harbour Supreme Court murder trial of Mitchell Anthony Winefield will today commence its third day of deliberations.

The 12-member panel returned before Justice Robert Shallcross Hulme yesterday afternoon and explained it was deadlocked in reaching a unanimous verdict on a charge of murder.

It then returned to closed chambers to continue deciding Winefield's fate.

When the jury reconvenes at 10am today, it will have spent almost eight hours in deliberations.

As the jurors came back into the court room yesterday, Winefield sat in the dock in front of a full public gallery.

The large audience again comprised friends and family of Caleb Jarrett, who Winefield, 44, is accused of fatally stabbing during a late night dispute in Mann Street, Nambucca Heads, 18 months ago.

After learning of the jury room stalemate, Justice Hulme urged the jurors to make further attempts to reach a verdict, suggesting they listen to the points of view of their fellow jurors. …
