Floral Delights Prove Popular; Garden Lovers Drawn to Annual Display

TABLES full of fresh flowers, plants, vegetables and floral art drew a good crowd to the opening of the Ipswich Horticultural Society's Spring Show at Brassall Shopping Centre yesterday.

The annual show is a fundraiser for local charities and a sales outlet for society members.

Fine examples of gardening excellence and award-winning exhibits will be on display until 2pm today.

A geranium won the top trophy for overall champion.

Brisbane judge Jenny Griffiths was taking a special interest in the cut flowers and floral art.

She said judging the entries was a very difficult job.

"All the entries were of very high quality," she said.

"I'm looking for freshness and form.

"It's nice to see the poppies, snapdragons and sweet peas still being grown.

"Garden styles are changing because people are working and are more interested in growing things that are easier to look after."

Society president, life member and former flower shop owner Dawn Jones is a veteran show entrant after a 40-year involvement with the society. …
