ENROLLING on a health and safety training course has proved a safe bet for two Teesside construction managers, both of whom are looking to boost their employment opportunities.

Geoff Douglas and David French have completed the highly regarded NEBOSH health and safety certificate at Stockton Riverside College after being made redundant.

The two construction professionals are hoping to broaden their employment opportunities with the coveted certificate.

Unemployed for the first time in their careers and facing dwindling prospects in the construction industry, both men realised that despite their years of experience they could gain a lot from developing their professional and higher level skills.

They were part-funded through OneDoor - a partnership between Teesside University and five FE colleges to provide an education and higher-level learning gateway for individuals and businesses across Tees Valley - and are now equipped to take on new roles as health and safety assessors both within and outside of the construction industry.

Geoff, 55, from Norton said: "I've worked for the past 39 years in various roles around the globe and latterly worked as a construction manager in Berkshire.

"Whilst the construction industry is volatile, this is the first time I have found myself out of work and seeing that there were very few opportunities either home or abroad, I began looking at ways of improving my employment opportunities.

"My last client was in the nuclear sector, therefore hugely focused on health and safety, and I developed a keen interest in this field.

"Finding out that there was a NEBOSH training course virtually on the doorstep, along with help towards the costs, was most heartening.

"Whilst the course has been challenging I have thoroughly enjoyed it and feel more confident about what lies ahead. …
