A GROUP of adventurous surgeons are due to climb Africa's highest peak to raise money for vital hospital equipment.

Consultants Jo Cresswell, David Chadwick and Monica Hansrani, from the division of surgery at James Cook University Hospital, are to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this month to help provide cutting edge medical equipment for keyhole surgery on Teesside.

The division already has an established keyhole surgical service, with Miss Cresswell, Mr Chadwick, and their colleagues, regularly performing the minimally invasive surgery to treat kidney and prostate cancer, but the specialised instruments are expensive to buy.

On the climb, the trio will be joined by trust non executive director Marion Lowe, who will be supporting the Get Hooked charity for young people, Duncan Harris, a Stokesley based dentist and Kath Martin, manager from the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle.

Miss Hansrani is climbing to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. …
