Macaroni and Cheese Dinner Is Liked More Than It's Loved; Still Kraft Dish Makes a Good Impression with Panelists Overall

Whether it's made from scratch or comes in box, few can resist the creamy goodness of macaroni and cheese. It's the ultimate comfort food and a favorite of most children.

The familiar blue box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner is a staple item in many homes, and now Kraft offers a new Homestyle Deluxe Macaroni & Cheese Dinner.

Members of the Times-Union Consumer Panel have been preparing the Classic Cheddar, which is packaged in a pouch containing macaroni, seasoning mix, cheese sauce and bread crumb topping.

The entree can be cooked entirely on top of the stove or finished in the oven, which graduate student Danielle Thiemann chose to do. "I love a crunchy texture, and the bread crumbs were nice and crisp," she said. "I would have liked more, even though they covered the macaroni and cheese, but they really made the dish."

She described the sauce as tasting more like Velveeta than cheddar cheese and said the dish could have used a little less salt. "It's definitely better than Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner and makes a ton of food. My boyfriend thought it was amazing."

CPA Tina Holtsinger said she prefers making her own mac and cheese when she has time, but also buys Kraft macaroni dinner.

"This is much better and doesn't taste powdery or processed. The sauce comes out of the package with a Velveeta consistency, but once it's mixed in, it's smooth and has a great consistency."

She did all the cooking on top of the stove, but said next time she'll finish it in the oven. "This would be fine for someone to bring for Thanksgiving. We always have a side dish of macaroni and cheese."

College student Kyle Bridge couldn't find the Classic Cheddar in his store and had to settle for the 4 Cheese. "It was OK but not the greatest. The sharp cheddar would probably be better."

He had no problems with preparation but said he had to use scissors to open the "easy open" pouch. "For the effort, ease of preparation and price, I'd rather buy Stouffer's, Kraft blue box or Country Crock. …
