FOOTBALL: Golden generation. What golden generation?

Socceroo Brett Holman believes Australia's youngsters can defy the exit of stars in the coming years and push the national team higher up the world rankings.

Holman, Australia's top scorer at this year's World Cup, is set to be a central figure in Australia's qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He felt the likes of Dario Vidosic, Tommy Oar, Nathan Burns and Matthew Spiranovic had the ability to maintain the largely upward curve of the Socceroos in recent times.

With Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell, Lucas Neill, Brett Emerton and Mark Schwarzer all on the wrong side of 30, there had been fears the national team was set for a dip following January's Asian Cup in Qatar.

When asked if world No.20 Australia had the young talent to keep climbing up the rankings, Holman was straight to the point.

"Definitely," he said.

"Those young players are all talented.

"I think the most important part for them is to just keep playing regular football. …
