DURHAM and England bowler Graham Onions' career hangs in the balance as he prepares to undergo 'last resort' back surgery.

The pace bowler, who has missed virtually the entire 2010 domestic and international season, is to have a back operation next week and, as expected, will now definitely miss this winter's Ashes series in Australia.

The 27-year-old has struggled with the stress fracture-related problem for much of this year and the England and Wales Cricket board described the surgery, which will sideline Onions for up to nine months, as a last resort.

The Durham player, one of Wisden's cricketers of the year for 2009, said: "Obviously I'm shattered to have been ruled out of the Ashes with the prospect of a lengthy recovery period."

Onions made his Test debut against West Indies last May before helping England win the Ashes.

He was then selected for the winter tour to South Africa but was dropped for the final Test, leaving the third match in Cape Town at the start of January as his last taste of first-class cricket. …
