SOME parts of Middlesbrough have changed beyond all recognition but remarkably these two views taken from exactly the same position look remarkably similar.

So often when we publish these comparisons between an archive photograph and one taken recently the changes are almost beyond belief and you would hardly think that you were looking at the same place.

But these views of Linthorpe Road look very much the same despite the passage of well over seventy years.

Our archive photograph shows a scene taken from the middle of the street looking north towards the town centre.

The cameraman had positioned himself between the two tram tracks running down the centre of the road.

Although this photograph was not dated in our archive we know that it must have been taken before 1934 because that was when the last tram ran down Linthorpe Road.

It will be noticed that the tram travelling north is double decked which means that it could not have run the full length of the tramway to the Transporter Bridge. …
