MACKAY'S Orchid House will be a hive of activity on Sunday as members of the community learn how to grow the delicate flower.

Mackay Regional Council in conjunction with Mackay and District Orchid Society is running a free promotional day to educate residents about the fundamentals of orchids and how to grow them in their own backyard.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio and Acting Parks and Natural Environment portfolio councillor Karen May said orchids were stunning plants which thrived in Mackay's climate.

"There are over 700 varieties of orchids on display at the Orchid House including the popular corsage type orchid the Cattleya, soft cane Dendrobiums and the Phalaenopsis Orchid," she said.

"I suggest that residents come down to the Orchid House, have a look around and see what types of orchids they would like in their own backyard and garden."

There will be experts on hand to talk to and free workshops to help budding gardeners get started. …
