Bastien Reaches for New Heights; Paraplegic Shows What Can Be Achieved Alone

BASTIEN Perret's spirit of adventure could have been snuffed out five years ago, when a kite surfing accident left him a paraplegic.

Instead, the 32-year-old Frenchman has used his disability to inspire people as he continues to achieve amazing feats.

Mr Perret was at Suncoast Cable Watersports at Bli Bli yesterday as part of his six-month journey to sample the world's cable ski facilities.

He has been around Europe and to Asia and Africa to show people how life must be lived to the full, even if you are in a wheelchair.

While he has a squad of family and friends willing to help him, Mr Perret prefers to do it alone. "I try and do things to the maximum autonomously," he said.

"I want to show people it is possible to do something in a wheelchair and you don't, every time, need help."

This is one reason why Mr Perret switched his kite board for a wakeboard.

"I can do kite surfing in a chair, but I need lots of help. …
