I HAVE been following the brilliant journalism in the Gazette about our identity.

We have had many great points and ideas put forward, but everyone misses the real point and the Gazette is probably the only organisation to realise it.

We live in a modern age of global marketing and media. We have so much to sell here yet we constantly regress into a local bubble instead of telling our story nationally and internationally.

I have attended most of the meetings and seminars and despair at our parochial instincts. When Location Location said we were the worst place in the UK to live we should have taken a double page spread in a national newspaper (one with worldwide publication) and under a banner headline of Worst Place to Live in the UK produced a montage of our best assets and beautiful countryside. No words needed.

What did we do, we complained in local newspapers - big deal.

For once we need to do something which is going to make the rest of the UK sit up and take notice. Why shouldn't we have something that others envy and want to copy? Middlehaven could be a fantastic development but have we got the bottle to do it justice? We need a strong collective regional voice that is strongly supported by us all and is given the tools to make us succeed.

TREVOR ARNOLD MBE, Senior partner, Simpson Coulson and Lees, Billingham * * * * * * IN defence of the Tees Valley name for our five district councils - Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington, Redcar & Cleveland - it does give a more attractive vision of the area than Teesside, which smacks of industry and smoke stacks.

Tees Valley has been working for some time in the area to create an identity for this region of five councils and has had success in tourism, economic development, etc. We should be wishing them success in their application for the LEP grant for our area. …
