RACING: Rockhampton's sprinting sensation, that magnificent grey five-year-old thoroughbred race mare Aspiran, is enjoying a few days "R and R" at the Dalma property of her owners Neil and Elspeth Vagg before embarking on yet another jaunt to Brisbane along the Bruce Highway.

Aspiran returned home on Sunday, completing another 1270-kilometre round trip by float just 24 hours after she earned the Vaggs $32,000 from her all-the-way Doomben Open Handicap (1010m) win, which was her second at that course during this current preparation.

Under the training guile of Rockhampton's Vic Vagg, that preparation, which started on June 11 after a long convalescence from a fetlock operation, has taken Aspiran to three wins, three seconds and a fourth placing from seven starts.

Those starts, which have included four consecutive trips to Brisbane to race since July 17, have netted connections $72,000, so the 5080 kilometres in float travel by Neil Vagg along the Bruce Highway with Aspiran has paid off handsomely.

"She just loves the travel. I stop at Gin Gin at the showgrounds to give her a half-hour break and then continue on to the Deagon Training Facility, where the first thing she does is roll and play in the sand roll. Then we have a walk and pick of grass. She is very used to it by now," Neil Vagg said.

As is the usual routine after returning from Brisbane, Aspiran will remain on the grass at the Vaggs' property before returning to training at Callaghan Park, Rockhampton, later this week.

"She has a short break after each trip and seems to be thriving on that," Vagg said.

Aspiran's next assignment is the $50,000 Open Handicap (1000m), this time at Eagle Farm, where the best she has raced from three attempts was for a second at her first Brisbane outing on August 13, 2008. …
