DURING the school holidays I took my two children (aged 10 and 7) to the new play area at Errington Woods in New Marske.

It looks quite impressive and the children had a great time, but what worried me was the number of dogs allowed to roam free in the play area and the amount of dog mess.

The loose dogs pose a hazard, they can get excited and chase the children who are running around (although this did not happen when I was there) and this could scare the children being chased, particularly if it is a larger dog.

There is also the possibility that a dog may interpret play fighting or just robust/loud play as something else and intervene, causing a child to be bitten.

The dog mess also is a hazard as it can cause toxocariasis which is an infection caused by the roundworm dogs (and cats) can carry which then uses us humans to grow. …
