Suns Move on to Title Round; South Winner Jacksonville to Face Tennessee in Southern League Championship Series

The Jacksonville Suns are headed to the Southern League championship series for the third time in six years and second year in a row.

The Suns received their fourth consecutive solid effort from a starting pitcher in their South Division playoff series with the Mobile BayBears, as Jose Rosario allowed one hit and one run in five innings in an 8-3 victory over the BayBears Sunday at the Baseball Grounds to capture the first-round series 3-1.

The Suns will travel to Kodak, Tenn., today to prepare for the Southern League championship best-of-five series against the Tennessee Smokies. The Smokies won the North Division series Sunday with a 5-2 win over West Tenn to win their series 3-1.

Jacksonville and Tennessee will play the first two games on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Smokies' home park. After a travel day on Thursday, Game 3 will be Friday at the Baseball Grounds, as well as games the next two nights, if necessary.

With no advance promotion about Sunday's game, the Jaguars playing at home earlier in the day and a threat of rain, the smallest crowd in the eight-year history of the Baseball Grounds, 851, turned out.

Suns third baseman Matt Dominguez was the hitting hero, finishing with a home run and a triple, scoring three runs and driving in four. He hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to hike the Suns' lead to 3-0 and added a two-run triple in the seventh when the Suns put the game away with a four-run inning.

"I got some good pitches to hit with guys in scoring position and it came out good for us," Dominguez said. "But our goal is to win the [Southern League] title. That's why you didn't see a lot of celebration tonight. We had to get through this round. Our main goal now is to beat the Smokies in the finals. They're a great team and we're all looking forward to playing them again. …
