Junior League Bad Behaviour Tackled

DESPITE a late-season flurry of abusive behaviour, the number of judiciary hearings at the Ipswich Junior Rugby League has nearly halved this year.

Two of the worst incidents of the year occurred in the last weeks of the season, one of which involved an under-16 coach punching a player during a post-match brawl at Lowood.

The coach has been suspended for two years but is appealing the Ipswich Junior Rugby League's (IJRL) decision.

The other incident, as reported in The Queensland Times yesterday, involved Swifts under-11 coach Darren Boettcher verbally abusing and intimidating 16-year-old referee Samantha McDonald.

But the IJRL season was generally excellent in terms of player, staff and spectator behaviour.

This season only 13 non-players were found guilty of behavioural offences at the IJRL judiciary.

Last year there were 18 non-players found guilty.

This year there were 20 players found guilty on various charges, significantly down on the 42 players found guilty of offences last year. …
