UNITYWATER boss Jon Black has warned Sunshine Coast ratepayers to expect big increases in their sewerage charges.

The glum news follows a storm of controversy over the spiralling cost of water since the company took over the region's water on July 1.

Mr Black yesterday repeated comments he made at a Kawana Chamber of Commerce meeting on Wednesday, in which he said Unitywater had no choice but to raise sewerage charges considerably due to inheriting hundreds of millions of dollars of capital expenditure for sewage treatment plant upgrades.

"There's little choice but to expect those (increased) charges," he said.

"We've inherited a $657 million capital works program over the next three years and Unitywater is now scrutinising every aspect of that expenditure to ensure it's absolutely necessary and it's prudent and it's efficient."

Mr Black did not say how much of those capital works improvements would take place on the Coast.

However, he said in the near future the Coast's sewerage system would need asignificant augmentation and improvement to meet ever increasing environmental compliance requirements and the challenge of the growth of the regiona. …
