THE Gazette reported Stockton's rejection of the idea of an elected mayor the same day that it highlighted the hard work and skills of local authority staff that have enabled the authority to be named Council of the Year.

I would rather see the pounds 200,000 the leader of the Thornaby Independents apparently wants to spend on a mayoral referendum invested in local services which will be under pressure because of the coalition Government's cuts.

Even a well-run council like Stockton will have an enormous task protecting the quality of life and environment of local people.
