Middleburg sophomore quarterback Austin Waldron ran four consecutive downs and got the final 1-yard touchdown plunge to lift the Broncos to a 35-28 non-district win over visiting Ridgeview on Sept. 10.

The Broncos went to 2-0 for the season with Ridgeview at 0-2.

"He's a great player, very unselfish and understands the team game as we play it," Broncos coach Rob Justino said of Waldron. "We haven't beaten Ridgeview in a long time and the kids are now believing in the system."

With just six minutes left on the game clock, the Broncos were down 28-27 after Ridgeview took the lead on a Josh Moore-to-Anthony Terry 35-yard touchdown pass. Waldron took over after a 25-yard scamper by halfback Donique Dillon, who put the ball at the Panther 21-yard line. On the next play, Dillon blasted one more time to the Panther 10-yard line before Waldron took four shots at the goal line, finally succeeding.

"He is running the offense the way it is supposed to be run, and the guys in front of him are seeing the results," Justino said. "He will do what it takes to gives us a shot to win."

In the first half, led by tailback Cory Williams, the Broncos hit pay dirt first, with Williams pounding four of five plays before an 8-yard scoring run.

The Panthers answered with an 11-play, 70-yard scoring drive topped by fullback Bernard Chevalier's 1-yard run.

The Panthers scored next on defense with linebacker Darius Dornes rambling 65 yards with a fumble. Middleburg struck back with a touchdown pass to Chauncey Johnson to stay close at 14-13 as the second quarter started. Ridgeview followed with a 72-yard run by Chevalier to the Broncos 5-yard line, where Andrew Harmon got the score to put the Panthers up 20-13.

One minute later, Middleburg answered, with Williams going 16 yards to put the game at 21-20. Williams scored again at 3 minutes left in the half to give the Broncos a 27-21 halftime lead.

A Panther interception by Darrell Collins halted Middleburg's first second-half drive and put the Panthers in position for a 35-yard touchdown pass to Terry that upped the score to 28-27 for Ridgeview. …
