When Actions Speak Louder Than Words; NY Cop Attends Body Language Seminar at SCU

HE'S A fast-talking cop from the mean streets of New York City, but his audience yesterday didn't get tales of car chases or crime.

Detective Jeff Thompson fires off words, not bullets.

Mr Thompson is a detective who specialises in communications and he's hyper-enthusiastic about his subject.

His wife was born in Murwillumbah and they have beenreturning to Australia since 2003. During the trips he shares some of his in-depth knowledge, as in yesterday's seminar in body language at Southern Cross University's Lismore campus.

A conflict specialist with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Mr Thompson has experience in law enforcement, mediation and conflict resolution across the five boroughs.

Understanding the science and the art of non-verbal communication could give somebody, including police officers, a big advantage, Mr Thompson said.

Of all the tools a patrol officer carries around with him, communication skills are the most important, he said. …
