Battersby to Leave Bears on Winning Season Note; Risdon Cup Leaders Gear Up for Next Challenge

SUCCESSFUL Toowoomba Bears coach Bryan Battersby will step down next season while Gary Briscoe is undecided if he will stay in charge of USQ for a third year.

Battersby's announcement comes in the wake of a successful 2010 season for both clubs which ended in premiership victory last Saturday for Bears over the competition's minor premiers.

Bears' Risdon Cup win was their second in the space of three years but the club is already bracing itself for a loss of key personnel for 2011.

"I'll be stepping down as A Grade coach and Hamish Procter, who worked with me this year in a co-coaching role, will be in charge of the team next season," Battersby said.

"I'd like to retain some involvement with the club but I haven't settled on what that might be yet.

"Last Saturday was a very satisfying note to go out on."

Battersby said Bears are likely to also lose key players.

Mick Jarroush, Luke Peachey, Ben Dare, Tom Capel, Stuart Valdal and Leighton Saal are likely losses in 2011. …
