FABRICIO COLOCCINI has backed Chris Hughton's policy to attempt to "box clever" in the Carling Cup - even if it does mean he is dropped tonight.

The Argentine was in fine form at Everton at the weekend as he helped record a second clean sheet in five games for the Magpies in the Premier League.

However, the emphasis will turn to former England defender Sol Campbell and youngsters such as James Tavernier and Tamas Kadar at Stamford Bridge.

Coloccini told the Chronicle: "Do I want to play? It is a nice game.

"Everyone wants to play this game, but we have to be clever because the most important thing is the league."

Should United somehow find a way past double winners Chelsea tonight a place in the final 16 will be theirs - and they can look forward to Saturday's lunchtime fourth-round draw.

Coloccini, though, has one eye on Stoke City at St James' Park on Sunday.

He added: "The Carling Cup is a good trophy, but we have to think the league is more important. …
