Solar Surge Sure to Cut Bills

SKY-rocketing electricity prices have sent Australians rushing to cut their energy consumption and flicking the switch to more sustainable energy sources, according to a recent on-line Newspoll.

The survey of 676 home-owners aged between 18 and 64, commissioned by Solahart, revealed that more than 97 per cent were trying to be more environmentally friendly and cut household energy bills. As many as 94 per cent were concerned by the hikes in energy prices and 88 per cent wanted to reduce household energy use.

Refusing to be beaten, the home-owners are tackling the price surge and climate change head-on with 79 per cent wanting to increase energy use from sustainable sources.

Solahart Gold Coast and Tweed manager David Sullivan said the Newspoll figures showed sustainable energy was no longer a niche agreenie' alternative, but mainstream.

"Until recently, sustainable energy was barely on the radar with householders and just a small proportion though of making the swap," he said.

According to the survey almost a quarter (22 per cent) of repondents have now replaced electric hot water systems with more energy efficient and environmentally-friendly alternatives such as solar water heaters, and 22 per cent have opted to pay extra for agreen power'.

In addition 89 per cent have installed energy efficient light globes, 72 per cent have purchased energy efficient appliances, and 64 per cent are turning off appliances when they are not in use.

National Solahart manager Stephen Cranch said the study showed that Australians were starting to take responsibility for their own carbon footprint and were looking to reduce their energy use even further due to consistent power price increases across the country.
