HUNDREDS of Tyneside commuters have signed up to a sustainable travel challenge.

Around 750 people have pledged to leave their cars at home to help save the environment after a week-long regional roadshow.

As part of a Europe-wide event, Tynesiders left the comfort of their vehicles to get to work by more green-friendly modes of transport.

The region's cycle lanes were busier than normal as the In Town Without My Car Day took over yesterday.

Green travel group Smarter Choices have been working with local councils and Galaxy Radio to highlight awareness of unnecessary car journeys.

And the Go Smarter roadshow proved a hit as it pulled into Newcastle city centre yesterday and showed car-reliant commuters what other options are at their fingertips.

Sally Herbert, sustainable travel officer at Newcastle City Council, said: "It's been the most popular event across Tyne and Wear. "And it's been great speaking to the commuters just before they go to work and on their way back, particularly those who have heard all these messages before but just needed more information. …
