MORE often than not, we buy cars out of necessity.

They serve as a functional, practical mode of transport to get us from Point A to Point B.

But some cars are different.

And the SLK 300 is one of these cars. From the moment you get out on the open road, with the wind through your hair and the power beneath the bonnet, you'll understand.

While it took me a moment to get used to sitting so low to the ground, the SLK 300's firm and supportive sport seats offered beautiful cushioning. And although slightly on the small side, the SLK offered just enough leg room for the passenger.

It was instantly clear that immense thought had gone into every last detail of this vehicle, with the steering wheel and gearshift fitting perfectly into my hands. Plus the clear, stylish dash was easy to read and everything was within close reach.

It was occasionally difficult to determine which button or dial controlled which function a largely due to the sheer number of buttons including full numeric keypad a but once this was sorted out, everything was simple to operate.

The roof itself was incredibly simple to operate, transforming the SLK from a roadster into a coupe in just 22 seconds with the push of a button.

Exceptional handling and precise steering left me feeling like it would be almost impossible to make a wrong move in the SLK.
