The Priory 27 Front Street, Tynemouth Tel: 0191 257 8302 IT'S exhausting, this Great North Run malarkey. You have to keep getting up from your sofa to butter more toast, boil the kettle and get the coffee ready as you watch dogooders and athletes on the telly. I managed to get enough energy back last Sunday, though, to treat Fusspot to a birthday lunch (I won't reveal how old!).

Along with our treasured friend Maggie, we decided to head up the coast to Tynemouth to check out a pub recommended to us from another great friend.

As the majority of the run had taken place south of the Tyne, we thought this would be the ideal place to go and to keep away from the crowds.

It was on both accounts. But we did get a little bit of exercise first, too, after parking the car in the village's Front Street.

You see there are two priories in Tynemouth - three if you count the actual priory itself.

We ended up in the Priory bar adjoined to the Gibraltar Rock first - only to be told we had the wrong bar, and the one we were looking for was the old Percy.

Apparently lots of people are making the same mistake, but confusion aside, when we eventually arrived at our correct destination we found it to be as warm, friendly and inviting as our friend had indicated.

It has been run for the past year or so by Kath Ennis-Burton, and it's clear from the off that her emphasis in runnning the place is on community spirit, good leadership and, important for us, fresh produce all round.

I'm a sucker for Sunday lunches 'as mum used to make', and that is exactly what you get at The Priory.

They have a good wine selection, and our bottle of Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc came chilled to perfection and brought out the flavours of all our meals immensely. There are three starters on the Sunday lunch menu, so we each had one of them. …
