Police Sergeant's Trial Postponed over Witnesses; Officer Is Accused of Falsifying a Burglary Report in June

The trial of a Jacksonville police sergeant accused of having a subordinate falsify a burglary report in August will be postponed a week for the defense to question witnesses about another criminal allegation against the veteran cop.

Circuit Judge David Gooding postponed the trial for Sgt. Marc Garza from Monday to at least Oct. 4 after hearing testimony Wednesday from a former squad member of Garza's who accused Garza of falsifying a burglary report in a June incident.

The rare night court session was held to hear attorney Mitch Stone's objection to the prosecution's intent to use details from the June case without him being able to question witnesses beforehand. Gooding ordered Stone and prosecutor Rich Komando to further depose witnesses next week.

Officer Karim Saoud, a former subordinate of Garza's, testified he, Garza and other officers went to a Northside apartment June 13 searching for an armed suspect. Saoud said when they heard something inside the apartment, Garza ordered him to kick in the door. …
