Eager Young Anglers Cast Away Weather Worries at Fishing Event

THE weather may not have been the best, but around 160 keen young fishers and their parents turned out to the annual Take a Kid Fishing day yesterday at Shoal Point.

The event was postponed earlier this year due to Cyclone Ului and the weather wasn't looking kind yesterday either, but the rain held off and just as predicted, the beach was swarming with kids, fishing rods and even the occasional fish.

Angler education co-ordinator for the Mackay district, Glen Fahy, was manning the telephones yesterday morning, with parents asking if the wild weather would affect the event.

But as he promised the callers, the annual event turned out to be a complete success.

"It was an excellent day; there was definitely more people than I expected due to the weather," Mr Fahy said.

"People just kept turning up; I must give a big thank you to the parents who brought their kids down for a great day on the beach. …
