CALL FOR RING ROAD TO BE TOP PRIORITY Call Is for a Ring Road, More Lanes and Better Intersections

How the 171 people who completed the survey responded:

79 per cent used the Bruce Highway daily

95 per cent listed a car as their primary mode of transport, but 88 per cent predicted it would remain the same in the future

Two per cent listed cycle as their main mode of transport, but three per cent predicted they would mainly cycle in the future

72 per cent used the Bruce Highway during peak times of between 7am and 9am and 4pm and 6pm

70 per cent felt congestion was the main issue with the Bruce Highway. 17 per cent said heavy vehicles were the main issue. Three per cent were concerned about maintenance and another three per cent were worried about traffic signals

46 per cent favoured an alternative alignment, while 21 per cent supported an upgrade of the existing route. 33 per cent supported both options.

GIVE us a ring road, but don't turn Nebo Road into a six-lane highway.

That was the overwhelming message from the 171 people who responded to the Bruce Highway Mackay Urban Congestion Study.

Almost 80 per cent of respondents supported the construction of an alternative alignment, or ring road.

Top priorities highlighted by respondents included the need for extra traffic lanes and improvements to various intersections from Hay Point Road through to Bald Hill Road.

However, Nebo Road was a no go zone when it came to the subject of adding more lanes.

"The number of heavy vehicles using Nebo Road and the need to provide an alternative route to cater for this traffic was another issue raised by respondents," a Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said.

"Concerns were also raised about the option to construct six lanes of traffic on Nebo Road, due to the impact of property resumptions on local businesses, and ultimately tourism in the area. …
