THE Federal Government and Opposition vowed to stay the course in Afghanistan as they honoured five soldiers killed since the last parliamentary sitting.

Private Nathan Bewes, Trooper Jason Brown, Private Grant Kirby, Private Tomas Dale and Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney were remembered in the new parliament yesterday.

All five died in July and August during the election campaign, with both Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott attending their funerals.

Ms Gillard moved a condolence motion on behalf of the parliament on the first sitting day of the 43rd parliament.

It was important the parliament remembered the sacrifices of C[pounds sterling]five fine menC[yen], Ms Gillard said.

C[pounds sterling]We must always be grateful because a nation that allows itself to forget is not worthy of the legacy that they have left to us,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]We will not forget, we will remember these five men who came from different suburbs and towns, attended different schools and held different beliefs. …
