TURNING a mountain of mattresses into a molehill is the latest goal for waste management on the Coast.

Sunshine Coast Regional Council and community organisation STePS have joined forces to start a trial program to divert 14,000 mattresses from landfill each year.

The month-long trial, which begins tomorrow, is a direct action from the Waste Minimisation Strategy developed in 2009.

The strategy determined that council could save up to four Olympic swimming pools of landfill space each year by finding a way to recycle mattresses.

STePS CEO Carmel Crouch said the project was inspired by a recent trip overseas to look at recycling initiatives and how they could stimulate employment opportunities.

Mattresses taken to landfill sites across the Coast will be transported to the drive-through recycling station on Pierce Avenue at Caloundra, where STePS already operates the shop and recycling systems.

Four part-time STePS employees will dismantle and recycle the foam, timber and steel by hand. …
