Pont Pile on the Pressure; Unbeaten United Threaten Leaders: Pin Point Recruitment Northern Alliance Premier Division

Article excerpt

PONTELAND United are unbeaten in seven league starts.

In second place with two games in hand, they are posing a threat to Alnwick Town's hold on pole position.

A 2-1 victory at Blyth Town kept the black-and-whites on course.

However, they fell behind just before the break when a goalmouth scramble led to Blyth's Jonnie Mann poking the ball home.

Ponteland responded well in the second half, and on the hour John Dunn raced on to a high ball into the area and rounded home goalkeeper Scott Earle to equalise.

With five minutes to go, Dunn scored his second vital goal for United and it was almost identical to his first.

In midweek, league leaders Alnwick Town had beaten Blyth 1-0 at St James' Park, where midfield dynamo Kevin Elliot scored their vital 34th-minute goal.

Under pressure from two Blyth defenders, he managed to slip the ball past goalkeeper Earle from just inside the area.

Ian Herron was Blyth's most dangerous player and was close to getting his team back on terms before half-time.

The Alnwick lads followed up with a 4-1 victory at Cramlington Town which left them four points better off than rivals Ponteland.

Cramlington's Chris Ridgway cancelled out James Swordy's early opener for Alnwick, but the visitors had Chris Moffat and Scott McMullen on target to give them a clear half-time lead.

Ten minutes after the interval Alnwick goalkeeper Michael Armstrong was stretchered off with a leg injury, but Tom Vickers completed the winning tally in the 75th minute.

Percy Main leapfrogged over Harraby Catholic Club into third place while the defending champions were on cup duty in Cumbria.

The Main recovered from a recent dip in form to claim a 1-0 victory over Gateshead Rutherford at Beggarswood.

It may have been different, though, if Rutherford's Robbie Frame had not shot wildly over from an early Michael Jeffares cross. …
