How's ,CyRailers' Sound for New Team Name? PHANTOM CALL

Article excerpt

THE joint venture between Eastern Raiders and Strollers in the Ipswich division one and two cricket competitions has thrown up some fascinating talking points.

Not least of them is what the teams will be known as.

Phantom has thrown a few names into the mix, including the Eastern Rollers, Strolling Raiders, Striders, Railers, Strainers and High Plains Drifters.

The final suggestion is mostly because Phantom is a big Clint Eastwood fan and thinks Greg Jeffers in a poncho and three-day growth is a deadringer for Clint in his gun-slinging days.

Bikini denial

IPSWICH City Councillor Cheryl Bromage has been a self-confessed fitness fanatic in recent months.

However, the sporty councillor laughed off suggestions she was preparing to join the planned bikini race for charity at the Gold Coast Turf Club in December.

Word spread quickly around Ipswich when someone suggested she was doing extra training so she could line up in the $5000 sprint at the Bundall venue.

As quickly as the rumour started, Cr Bromage denied she will be swapping her business attire for swimwear.

Cr Bromage said her mischievous personal trainer had spread the rumour as a joke.

"Politicians want publicity, but not that kind of publicity," Cr Bromage said.

Word was her trainer claimed she was being groomed as a finely-tuned athlete for the event.

"In my stable of fillies there is only one thoroughbred," the trainer declared.

Even if Cr Bromage was planning to run, the event is in limbo. The Gold Coast Turf Club is fighting a current Racing Queensland ban on the race.
