I HIRED a cherry picker yesterday. No, not to pick cherries Co or even those delicious fat mulberries at the top of our mulberry tree; I needed to install some Cygutter-guard' on the side of our two-storey house overshadowed by an umbrella tree.

Well, I soon got the hang of operating this machine, and it made everything so easy. I finished the installation of the gutter-guard, then decided to check the security lights mounted high up under the eaves. This done, I began lowering the platform. I was almost at ground level when it suddenly stopped.

A siren started screaming and the controls refused to respond. It was then that I noticed that the end of the lower boom had come to rest on an adjacent vine-covered brick garden wall. And it appeared that in coming to rest on the wall, the boom had acted like a lever and upset the level of the mounting platform. The safety mechanisms shut everything down. It took a call to the man from the hire people at Yamba Co and a service visit Co to sort out the problem. …
