CRAIG Gordon is convinced he will be returning to a Sunderland side which has vastly improved in his absence as the Scotland international prepares to seize the goalkeeping jersey from Simon Mignolet, writes LUKE EDWARDS.

Gordon is away with Scotland this week as he continues to work on his fitness and sharpness after three months on the sidelines with a broken arm.

The 27-year-old will not play for his national side in their European Championship qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Spain as he has still not played a first team game for the Black Cats since returning to training just over a fortnight ago.

But the former Hearts star will expect to be restored to Sunderland's starting line-up when they travel to Blackburn Rovers in 11 days time, as they attempt to build on the excellent performances against Liverpool and Manchester United.

"We've done the usual Sunderland thing this season doing well against the big teams, especially at home," said Gordon, who has been impressed with Mignolet's start in English football.

"What we need to add is doing well consistently against the teams who are in and around us.

"The Liverpool result was very good, a really good performance away from home - and that is encouraging, because it was our home form which let us down last season.

"Everybody worked hard and that's what you have to do if you're going to get anything from games like that. There is a good atmosphere around the place.

"We've had a hard start to the season if you look at the games we have played, but we've got ourselves into a pretty good position."

Everyone at the Stadium of Light has been careful to stay on message this week as they reflect on the achievement of collecting eight points from their first seven games, four of which have come against teams who finished in the top seven last term. …
