Conlon Edges Captain as Swifts' Best Player

IT will come as no surprise to anyone who saw him play this season.

Swifts fullback/five-eighth Wes Conlon was named best and fairest for the A-grade premiers at the club's awards evening last week.

"It was not something I expected," Conlon said, though captain Albert Talipeau was his only real opposition for the award.

"I just kept playing game-in, game-out. My goal was just to play some good football."

Conlon, 20, said the award was in part due to the quality of players he had alongside him at Swifts this year.

"I think when I'm around other good players I play a lot better," he said.

Conlon won the top gong despite a late-season shift from his preferred fullback position to five-eighth.

"I like fullback," he said.

"There's way more space to do things that I can't at five-eighth.

"I was thrown there at the last minute and had to change my game."

Making the transition easy for him, however, was having Joel Lennox alongside him at halfback. …
