Byron Cookies Now a Worldwide Treat; Exporting Products to 20 Countries Supplying 9000 Cafes

FROM its humble beginnings selling cookies at local markets in the 1990s, the Byron Bay Cookie Company has now established itself on the world stage exporting to 20 countries.

It's an amazing growth story that, with a bit of nous, company chairman Gordon Slater says can be emulated by other Northern Rivers-based businesses.

"If you start off with the right product that is unique and there is demand for it, then it'sfiguring out how you can get it to market and what you can bolt on to it," said Mr Slater, who joined the company about eight years ago.

"What we have done very successfully is to niche (market) and then to niche again."

Targeted at the upmarket consumer, the companies cookies, once baked under the name of Pickles, Pies and Petticoats, have found their way on to the shelvesof David Jones and the in-flight menus of Virgin and Qantas.

Mr Slater said about eight years ago the company decided to establish a joint venture to enter the UK market. …
