Saving Murray Not without Pain

THE final decision on how to improve the health of the Murray Darling River systems should be based on two premises: that everything possible should be done to ensure the Murray continues to reach the sea, and; other river systems should not be plundered in order to protect the two over-stretched rivers.

The response from industry user groups to the draft plan released on Friday was predictable and understandable a they do not want measures introduced that will impact on their livelihoods.

No-one wants that, but it is difficult to see how it can be avoided.

It goes without saying that water efficiency measures should be the first consideration, but if the health of the river system is to be improved, a range of measures a some of them unpalatable a will need to be introduced.

That includes reductions in water allocations, and farmers will need to learn to live with it. …
