ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - It's fall on the PGA Tour.

Time to scramble.

While the McGladrey Classic field this week includes 11 major championship winners at the historic Sea Island Club Seaside Course, it also includes the usual pack of PGA Tour journeymen who have only a few weeks to make up financial ground and ensure themselves of full status on the Tour for the 2011 season.

Two of the first-round leaders Thursday don't have those concerns in the Tour's second Fall Series event. John Rollins, who came one shot away from his career low on the Tour with a 7-under-par 63, is safe for next year because he won a tournament last year to get a two-year exemption and is 72nd on the current money list anyway.

Likewise, David Toms, a 12-time Tour winner and 58th on the money list, has no worries. He was briefly tied with Rollins for the lead before making a bogey on the par-4 ninth hole, his 18th, and is tied for second at 6-under.

Beyond that, there's are a lot of guys with churning stomachs this week. Tied with Toms is Troy Merritt, just ahead of the top-125 threshold (123rd) on the money list and needing to do more than just tread water. Three players are tied for fourth at 5-under, veteran and four-time Tour winner Joe Durant (131st on the money list), Michael Letzig (145th) and Rich Barcelo (191st).

A larger group tied at 4-under is led by two veterans who have no worries about their status, Justin Leonard and Heath Slocum. But Aron Price (135th on the money list) and Mathias Gronberg (168th) need some magic this week to move up the ladder, although they certainly got off to a good start by matching Leonard and Slocum at 4-under. There are only three tournaments remaining on the Tour schedule after this week, in California, Las Vegas and Disney World. Clearly, backs are against the wall. …
