Cuts Will Leave New Mums Isolated; VOICE OF THE NORTH

I AM writing this letter as the Labour councillor for Whitley Bay but, more pertinently, as a new mother. I access the various health visitor facilities and parent and baby/toddler groups in my local community and I understand that these are under threat as a result of the forthcoming cuts.

While on the face of it, these groups may appear to be a luxury, this is far from the reality. In fact, groups, such as the postnatal group and the baby club in Whitley Bay are a lifeline to parents who have little support or adult company through the day... and night.

They are a safety net for parents who just want to know they are doing things ok and to meet other parents who are experiencing the same issues. They are also somewhere parents can go to feel properly supported, to hear advice from experienced health professionals.

Baby massage is one of the groups which is soon to be cut. It isn't just about learning the techniques of massage, it is about encouraging parents to get to know other parents, to talk, to receive advice, to spend quality time with their children, to bond with them and to offer therapeutic and soothing responses, when colic, amongst other baby ailments, take hold. …
