CAMPAIGNERS yesterday delivered a petition with 4,000 names calling for a train building to come to the North East.

North East MPs joined forces with council, union and business chiefs to hand in the petition to the Government as the battle to secure a state-of-the-art train factory in Newton Aycliffe moves up a gear.

The moves come after Japanese train builder Hitachi declared the region was its preferred location for a new plant to build a new fleet to run on the East Coast Main Line.

Campaigners say hundreds of jobs would be created at the factory and thousands more in the supply chain as a result of the Government approving the intercity express programme, providing a massive boost to the region's economy just as public spending cuts hit.

It has been estimated that for every pounds 1 invested, there would be a return of pounds 48 over 20 years while the total benefit to the North East would be pounds 660bn. …
