Hughton: Taylor Is Far from Forgotten; Still No Deal but Centre-Back in Manager's Thoughts

THERE might be an eerie silence about the offer of a new contract but Chris Hughton has reassured transfer-listed Steven Taylor he is part of Newcastle United's future plans.

Taylor is due back in training next week, and Hughton insists the 24-year-old will be considered for selection as soon as he returns to full fitness.

The home-grown centre-back was put up for sale in August when talks over a new deal hit an impasse. Taylor's contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he will be free to talk to potential suitors about a Bosman free transfer in the new year. To make matters worse for the former England Under-21 captain, he dislocated his shoulder in pre-season, and therefore cannot gauge where he stands in Hughton's thinking. The Newcastle manager is adamant he has not been forgotten about, however.

But while the defender appears to retain Hughton's confidence, there have been no signs of movement over a new contract since talks broke down two months ago. "I'm not aware of any progress at the moment," Hughton admitted. "We still very much want him at this football club.

"We're looking at him training next week. He needs to get fit. We're aware of what a very good player he is. …
