PEOPLE who still think of Kia as a manufacturer of cheap, low quality motors are as up to date as those who still make Skoda jokes. This Korean-based car maker produces fine cars with lavishly confident seven-year warranties, and the latest vehicle is a worthy addition.

The new Sportage is a crossover vehicle, half way between a saloon and an SUV, which drives like a car but has the adaptability of a 4x4. It is the first model produced completely under the guidance of Kia's new design guru Peter Schreyer, the man behind the Audi TT, and its handsome looks are bang up to date.

At the moment the only model available is a two-litre turbo diesel with four-wheel-drive and a full complement of kit, including a rear view mirror which partly converts into a TV screen to aid reversing. …
