ST JAMES' Park will host six Olympic football matches during the 2012 Games, it has emerged.

Olympic organisers yesterday announced the matches will be played at Newcastle United's home over the course of 10 days in July and August in 2012.

The 52,000 capacity stadium will host a mixture of preliminary group stage games and at least one quarter-final.

St James' Park is one of only six grounds in the country chosen as a venue for the Games, including Old Trafford in Manchester, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and Wembley Stadium in London. The teams which will play at each venue are still to be announced.

Today club bosses welcomed the announcement. A spokesman said: "The first game will be played on Thursday, July 26.

"The fixtures are scheduled for the following Sunday (July 29), Tuesday (July 31), Wednesday (August 1), Friday (August 3), with the final fixture taking place on Saturday, August 4."

Yesterday London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe came under fire after he revealed ticket prices for the Games will range from pounds 20 to pounds 2,012. …
