Shearer's Driving Ambition Helps Rugby Event

A HISTORIC rugby tournament has been given a boost by soccer legend Alan Shearer.

Durham School is hosting the four-team Round Robin next Saturday which will also feature first XVs from schools in Rugby in Warwickshire, Cheltenham in Gloucestershire and Sherborne, Dorset.

All four schools are credited with nurturing the sport in its formative years during the 19th century.

Durham School, in Quarry Heads Lane, decided to give half of all monies raised from an auction and raffle during a Celebration Ball at the Ramside Hall Hotel, along with bucket collection funds from the tournament, to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. Lady Robson, Sir Bobby's widow, has endorsed the event and gave it her personal backing, along with the charity's patron Shearer.

The ex-Newcastle United and England striker has offered to play a round of golf at Slaley Hall, Northumberland, paired with his former teammate Rob Lee, against the highest bidder at the auction.

The rugby tournament kicks off at 10am on October 23. …
